These days our kids are spoiled! Let’s admit it, the majority of them by the time they graduate high school lack the basic survival mechanisms. One is because they aren’t being taught in the public school system anymore and two, parents are not teaching the skills either ——and it could be because they were never taught them in their youthful years and are barely learning themselves.
Below are seven skills that EVERY child should know before they turn 18 and why.
Whether for business or personal, knowing how to do your own taxes can save some money. We aren’t taking away the need for a tax preparer, BUT if you are willing to learn to do your own taxes and want to save some extra cash, even if it’s just $20, taking a class on how to prepare taxes is very beneficial. You can also learn this skill to start a side-hustle or gig.
How to purchase property
No one wants to be a renter forever. Heck, I don’t want to rent at all! Ownership is where it is at! Once you buy your first house, whether you move to another city or just want to have some extra cash to pay off some things, sale and/or rent out your house. There are so many classes on real estate investing and some are very reasonable. When we take these classes, we can then teach our children these skills sets. We want to generate wealth back into the community and into our families, so let’s teach more kids how earn those six figures.
Foundations of starting and/or managing a business
You’ll never get rich working a 9 to 5 and you’re definitely limited to how much you can earn based on what your employer choses to pay you and/or how they manage the business. Now there is nothing wrong with working a 9 to 5 if you can take care of yourself, are not living paycheck to paycheck, able to do what you want when you want because money isn’t an issue and most importantly you are passionate about what you’re doing and working in your purpose.
However, the saying goes, ‘If you see a lack in the industry or can’t get something you need and you know you can do it yourself, then start that business.” Business classes should be a MANDATORY elective in high school.
How to eat healthy and exercise
Our kids are fat! And it is the school’s fault. From the vending machines to the food in the cafeteria, the food just isn’t healthy. I’m sorry, but if a child is not involved in sports, they should be doing PE all four years of high school and some sort of physical exercise NEEDS to be heavily implemented every day. When kids get home, parents also need stop giving kids anything they want. No child should be able to munch on chips instead of eating dinner. If that kid refuses don’t give in because eventually they’ll eat whatever is on the stove because they’ll get hungry. Also, Hot Cheetos is not breakfast! Give that child a banana, some Oat toast and bacon, etc., but no junk food to the day.
This one is heavy. Most parents are living in debt and live off that credit card and they don’t save or invest. If we train that child to save their allowance, gift money, etc., allow them to keep some and save the rest in a savings account. This will train their minds early.
Some schools are starting to offer yoga and meditation in elementary schools. I think that is awesome! Meditation and yoga help to ease and calm the mind. Kids go through a lot too. This will also probably help eliminate the bully problem.
There are too many adults that don’t know how to cook, clean, etc. When I was in high school they had a basic living class and it was fun! We enjoyed cooking and the freedom of coming up with recipes to cook. High schools need to bring back these classes and also make it mandatory in order to graduate. These skills are HIGHLY important to have when entering into a marriage for both the man and woman.
