Letting Go, Pressing Forward

With the new year upon us people are getting their resolutions in order, once again, and stating that they want a new change for the new year. However, each year it’s the same thing…people “change” for a brief amount of time and then dip right back into old habits. Why is that? Well it can be for a number of reasons, and each person is different which brings about different reasons  to why they don’t change or fall into the whole “New Years Resolutions” phantom each year.

The one thing that can be evident and the same for these individuals though is the way in which they let things go. The reason why most resolutions fail is not just because of personal commitment to the change, but because people have a difficult way of letting things go. Whether it be a relationship that ended badly, excessive drinking, hard core partying, excessive shopping, etc. Whatever it that someone cannot let go, it keeps a hold on them from being able to press on and move forward to greater things.

There are several factors that prevent people from being able to let go and move forward, and sometimes people do not even realize when they have that hold on them. It’s usually when another person brings something up that it is realized how much of a hold something has on a person.

1. Settling.

This is the main reason why most people can’t move forward. They try for a short of amount of time, but revert right back to whatever is holding them back. This is very common with relationships. Someone is in a relationship that is emotionally or physically abusive, yet they keep going back because they do not know they’re worth and feel as if they cannot find anything better. Even worse, some of these people have a fear of being alone.

As far as settling with do damaging behavior, this is usually the cause of boredom and people not having a positive activity to engage in; such as writing, reading, traveling, etc.

2. No positive influences.

When you are surrounded by negative people and things, it makes it very difficult to move forward to the greater things in life. Once you let go of the negative and let the positive in, watch how your world changes for the better.

3. Waiting for a benefit.

Sometimes people have a hard time letting go because the situation either benefits them or they are waiting for a benefit or something in return.  This can be holding a grudge against someone because they owe you money or not wanting to amend things with an ex to be friends because you hurting and feel that they owe you an apology, or maybe you can’t let your pride down for whatever reason to amend things.

There are so many reasons to why people refuse or think that they cannot let go of something or someone. Life is that much easier when we are able to realize what has a hold on us and is preventing us from moving forward in certain aspects of our lives. If you find yourself always criticizing what someone else is doing or pointing thee finger to tell someone else what they need to focus on on their lives when they already have their life in control, then chances are you have a hold on your life that needs to be let go.
