With the chaos that has been going on the Nation with out Black men, it is great to see a movie that celebrates the essence of our Black men. Last night I had the pleasure of covering and attending the Los Angeles premiere for the movie Chocolate City. The premiere took place that the Crest Theater in West L.A., and the evening was a very intimate, yet star studded event with the theater being packed with nothing but positive energy and excitement.
Chocolate City is definitely a film that you can grab your girlfriends for a girl’s night out. Dinner with the girls and then a little eye candy on the big screen while the boo gets to chill with his boys or watch the game in peace for a few hours back home. The film stars Robert Ri’chard who plays young struggling and barely making it by college student Michael McCoy. Michael and his older, lazy brother Chris McCoy, played by DeRay Davis, stay with their mother Katherine McCoy, played by Vivica A. Fox, who is also struggling to keep the bills paid and lights turned on in house after her husband had passed away. As a result Michael feels the urge to step out the ordinary to earn a little extra cash with the opportunity to work at Chocolate City. From being a little hesitant about the job at first, he found it to be fun but quickly learned a few things about himself that he wasn’t wiling to loose in the end.
Other recognizable names that were featured in the film include: Tyson Beckford (Adrian ‘Rude Boy’), Darrin Dewitt Henson (Magnus), Ginuwine (Pharaoh), Imani Hakim (Carmen-girlfriend of Michael), Matt Barnes (Eric Johnson), and a host of others. The film is directed by Jean-Claude LaMarre who also played Pastor Jones in the film. The night was definitely a celebration, not just for the director, but for each of the cast, crew members, and investors who saw potential in the film to make it a success. Those who were able to come out to help celebrate the film in Los Angeles included Imani Hakim, Gloria Govan, Matt Barnes, Trae Ireland, Sundy Carter, Jackie Christie, Clifton Powell, Eurika Pratts, Gilbert Saldivar,Maliah Michelle, Cydney Davis, Shawn McDonald, Jujo Ballo, Marwan Natate Granville, and a host of others.
Chocolate City is now playing in select theaters. In Los Angeles it is playing at Universal Studios City Walk and Lakewood.
