Greenville’s Malcolm X Center for Self Determination Invaded, Efia Nwangaza Assaulted by Racist Intruder

Greenville, SC — The Malcolm X Center for Self Determination in this Deep South city was physically invaded by a racist Trump supporter twice on December 21 and 22nd, and its leader Efia Nwangaza was assaulted. (Efia’s statement is found below.)

In response to this attack, the Greensboro, North Carolina chapter of the Stop Mass Incarceration Network is raising funds for a security camera for the Center. You may contribute to this by contacting the chapter at smin.nc@gmail.com.

The Malcolm X Center, through its director Efia Nwangaza, is affiliated with the Stop Mass Incarceration Network. Efia Nwangaza is an attorney, and lifelong political and social justice activist organizing in the South and nationally on African American reparations, police terror and mass incarceration. As well as the Stop Mass Incarceration Network, and the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation, Efia has been in leadership roles in many other national organizations including Green Party (US Senate 2004), National Organization of Women, Amnesty International, Not In Our Name, U.S. Human Rights Network, Pacifica Foundation, Jericho Movement to Free USA Political Prisoners, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, N’COBRA, Black Is Back Coalition.

Efia has been a target of the authorities and other right wing, fascist elements in the South. In January 2017, through a concerted phone calling and social media campaign, Efia defeated charges of “Pedestrian in the Roadway” — which potentially meant 30 days imprisonment — for organizing determined, nonviolent, civil protests against police terror and impunity in the police killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner by blocking highway traffic in December 2014.

Efia Nwangaza’s Statement

A White male, about 6′, gray hair, 40’ish year old, driving a Black or Dark Blue Chevy or Ford SUV, Lic plate# 9087(8?)B or K, burst into the MXC on December 21st and 22nd, 2017, around 4:00pm. He was menacing, belligerent and argumentative about our “Resign Rapist Swine” sign,” and supportive of Will Lewis (local sheriff)* and Donald Trump.

He refused to leave when I instructed him to do so, even despite my threatening to call police. He was cellphone recording each time he came. I ordered him to stop filming and get out. He persisted, blocked the door onto the street, pushed me. He dropped the phone 2x when I reached for it. I was then able to get by him to the door.

I ran outside and yelled to a passerby to call [for help] that I was being assaulted and stalked. When the perpetrator saw there was a young man across the street watching, aiming his phone as if filming him, I was able to get back inside, close and lock the door. The assailant pressed face against the glass door and called me “an ignorant nigger” through the door as he went to his car. I filed a report with the Greenville Police Department for a warrant, assault and stalking.

On afterthought, I went outside to see if I could see which way he’d gone and if I could get his license plate number. After dodging his efforts to run over me at the gas station where he’d parked, I was able to get some numbers and letters which is being run by the [authorities]. I suffered 2 broken fingernails and aggravated meniscus tear of my right knee.

Will Lewis is the sheriff of Greenville County, who is at the center of sexual harassment/assault charges by a former employee. The banner hanging outside of the Malcolm X Center initially referred to the growing calls for Lewis’s resignation; but as Efia has elaborated, “Then as more perpetrators have been exposed [the banner] included Trump and all of them [who] fit in this rape, patriarchal culture!!!”
