BLK MKT Vintage, a marketplace dedicated to shifting black cultural artifacts from marginal to center through thoughtful curation and accessibility, has opened the first brick and mortar shop for the company in the historic Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY on Small Business Saturday. Following a wave of national exposure in publications like Essence Magazine and Vogue, the Brooklyn-based couple’s new store will function as an event space with vibrant community-led programming, an archive, retail space, and base for the BLK MKT Vintage brand.
“Our work centers the richness of black experience, and for the last five years, we have brought black historical narratives to the contemporary,” explains owners Kiyanna Stewart and Jannah Handy. “As business owners dedicated to pushing the culture, we are elated to continue on this journey and reclaim a space within a community that has such deep roots into the evolution of black culture in New York City.”
With over 15 years of collecting and picking experience combined, owners Stewart and Handy have taken their affinity for African American vintage wares and narratives to the mainstream bringing their curation skills to well-known entities including HBO’s Insecure, Facebook, The Brooklyn Museum, Music Academy, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Studio Museum of Harlem, and Essence Festival. In addition, the duo has worked with a host of celebrities to source niche items, curate and help design bespoke living spaces including Lenny Kravitz, Lena Waithe, Melina Matsoukas, Ashley Graham, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Spike Lee, Yara Shahidi, Roxanne Gay, Soledad O’Brien, Issa Rae, Gia Peppers, Tarana Burke, Asia Kate Dillion and Quality Control Record’s Kevin Lee.
The new store will offer an entire range of classic vintage items including literature, vinyl records, clothing, art, housewares/decor, furniture, and more.
A celebration of the duo and their new store was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by family, elected officials, celebrity and close friends.
The event was sponsored by Amour Genève Wine.
