When it comes to addressing issues within our community, we will address just about every issue besides mental illness. So, Little Pookie needs bail money? I got you cuz! Frankie just came out of the closet? We may be a little upset but at the end of the day, that’s Frankie’s life and we still love him. But don’t let Ray Ray tell you he is mentally ill and needs help. We don’t want to believe he’s cray cray or if he is, we don’t know how to support him in the way that we should.
Mental illness is still very taboo in our community. This is why I applaud those that are bringing awareness to it so that we can understand it better. Author Lisa Y. Sparrow released her first book, “His Eye is On the Sparrow” where she talks about her journey growing up as a mentally ill woman.
Lisa has never felt loved or wanted. Born into a family that she never quite fit into, her teenage years were spent alternating between the foster care system various mental health institutions. How could the very people charged to protect her make her feel so worthless.
I recently interviewed Lisa where she brought enlightenment and awareness to the topic, as well as sharing her journey for Purposely Awakened radio.
