A Tribute to My Grandmother

In Memory of

Madam Mary Aghenechianya Nebo (a.k.a. Mmoodu/Mma Sawyer)

Laid to Rest at 102 Years Old on October 5, 2018

Recently, I just lost my beloved grandmother who passed away on September 2, 2018 after a brief illness. We will miss her terribly. She was one special lady and the loss of her is felt deeply by many, even though she lived a full life.

For the past few years, she bravely fought through chronic waist pain due to aging and seeing her suffer in those last hours was extremely difficult. Grandma always kept her mind and body active, which is one of the aspects of her personality that I admire so much.

The best lesson that she has left us with is her example of strength. She was one of the finest women I’ve ever met. She was very energetic and courageous, and an icon per excellence and generous in nature. She was always encouraging unity and equality. She was thoughtful, resourceful and reliable.

Even with some of her challenges, especially toward the end of her journey here on this Earth, she faced this world with faith and love. Even when she couldn’t communicate in a way that we understand, Ma’ama is a woman of parables and her light still shone through.

The love of a grandma is unique. God must have given grandmothers to us to liven up our lives and to make our lives more complete; to make us well rounded and better human beings.

She played a big part in uniting her children. I can remember so many times sitting in her room to enjoy melody of kind words that inspired us all. She taught me a lot about love and the meaning of family. She has never been just ‘my grandmother’, but my guardian, my friend and source of my inspiration.

Even at this moment, we can’t believe my lovely Grandma was taken away from us. At 102 years old she was still mentally sound.

Mummy general whom everyone in the family look up to for advice even at old age, incomparable Grandma. Honestly, I’m short of words but if I should count my blessings I will count Mama Shi Nne twice. We will miss our Grandmother, but her spirit and strength lives on in each of us and in the lives that she touched.

She lives on in me and in all those who have been touched by the love, strength, conviction, wisdom, and beauty of her soul. Bigger than the sorrow we all feel as heaven, and each of us, gains another angel, is the light of her life’s legacy. The light represented by each person in this room who was touched by her and continues to be living, breathing proof that this world was made better because of her life. Love you grandma – You truly were a special, special woman! You may have passed on, but your memories would always live on within us. Thank you for your sacrifices, your care and concern, your love and everything that you have done for me. Wherever you are, I know you are in a much better place. I will be forever grateful and thankful that you are my ‘grandmother’. Rest in Peace Grandmother…we will never forget you and we will always love you forever.

Your Grandson,

Master Jude Nebo
