According to the New York Daily News, Danae Mines, one of 41 women in New York City Fire Department, has made history of being the first woman to be featured in the FDNY Calendar of Heroes which usually only highlights the male counterpart.
Mines has been in the department for 11 years working for Engine Co. 60 in South Bronx, NY. Her road of accomplishing this task was no easy walk in the park and she definitely didn’t have a host of supporters.
“I was told it was all guys. They said if I made it in the calendar, I would look like a pinup girl”, she stated.
Miss Danae didn’t let those comments block her blessing, so she auditioned where she competed for the 13 calendar spots against 100 men. She was a bit scared because of the fact that she was the only female, but something sparked within her that the judges saw and she was chosen as Miss March.
Mines photo was shot by nightlife photographer Patrick McMullan. The calendar will be on sale for $17.95 with proceeds benefiting the FDNY Foundation to provide fire-safety education, training and equipment for firefighters. Miss Mines hopes to encourage more women to follow in her footsteps.
“I wanted my picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see me and know they can do this job”.
